WHAT TO BRING TO THE RAINFOREST
The jungle fashion is hiking type gear for hot and moist climates. Refugio staff will do your laundry at least once if you wish.

Bring what you need for comfort and pack light. You may also want to leave room in your luggage to bring back crafts and souvenirs. Some guests pack an extra duffle. We do our best to make time for shopping in Iquitos and depending on flight schedules, may have enough time in Lima to drive into Miraflores and shop the Indian markets.

We also ask that you consider bringing an extra duffle bag with women and children's clothes that are given to the locals. Your generous effort would be deeply appreciated.

Here are some packing items to consider: Keep it simple.

  • Current passport!
  • Cash for crafts and souvenirs, extras in Iquitos or Lima, tips and "emergency" funds
  • The basics: tee shirts, underwear, socks
Nylon hiking pants and shorts (or convertibles).
  • You will want to tuck long pants into your socks when walking through grass fields
  • Long sleeved nylon and/or cotton shirts. Nylon breathes and dries out faster
  • Sweater/pullover for occasional chilly nights
  • Swimming suit, goggles
  • Rubber boots (These are normally worn in the jungle and around. Most can get along with a pair of rubber boots and some Tevas. Rubber boots can be bought in Iquitos for $6 and we normally leave them there when we depart)
  • Floppies or Tevas
  • Hiking or walking shoes (If you prefer for getting around towns)
  • Towel
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Sun protection
  • Light rain jacket or plastic poncho, umbrella
  • Good books to read
  • Notebook/journal/pen
  • Camera (with extra batteries and film)
  • Binoculars
  • Lighter (for candles) (Remember to pack it in your bags, they will not allow a lighter to be carried on the plane. You can also get lighters in Iquitos before you leave for the jungle)
  • Your normal vitamin regimen plus extra Vitamin B (helps with the mosquitoes)
  • Mosquito spray (natural and the deet in case they are heavy)
  • Chigger relief (On the rare chance you encounter chiggers in a village) Check with your health consultant. One option we know if is Permethrin cream (5%).
  • Medicine for parasites (just in case). . Again, Check with your health consultant. One natural cure is Pure Encapsulations, A.P. Formula as an option.
  • Roll of toilet paper (tough to find in some places - like airports)
  • Personal stuff - toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, essential oils, clippers
  • Other items we have seen: back jacks for ceremonies, own pillows, meditation cushion
